The recent visit of State Councilor and Foreign Minister Of China Wang Yi to Banjul has instilled confidence in the Gambians that the bilateral relationship will continue to bear fruits.

China has helped fund many of Gambia’s developmental projects, including the construction of the country’s first-ever International Conference Center at about 50 million U.S. dollars.
Ebrima Kinteh, an entrepreneur, welcomed the visit of Chinese foreign minister Wang.

“I am glad that Gambia has received the Chinese foreign minister to see what Gambia really needs in terms of development so that they can chip in,” he said, citing Gambia’s Independence Stadium, which was constructed with Chinese aid about three decades ago, and Jahally Pacharr Rice Field, an agronomy site in the country’s Central River Region, as bright examples of the relationship.

Last December, Gambian Adama President Barrow laid foundation stone for the construction of several bridges and road networks, including a 50 km one that connects Sandu, Wuli and Basse in the Upper River Region, through grants from China.

Muhammed Ceesay, a representative of Gambia National Youth Council in the region, praised the projects for help improving locals’ lives.

“Constructing bridges and roads will reduce maternal deaths,” he said, because it will be much easier to refer pregnant women between health facilities.

“It will contribute to economic growth because business cannot thrive without good road networks,” Ceesay added.

He expressed hope that the Gambia-China relationship will lead to greater development in his region.

Yankuba Conteh, an economics student at the University of The Gambia, said the visit of the Chinese foreign minister has given him hope that bilateral cooperation will be further cemented.

He said a lot is expected in terms of opportunities for Gambian students to further education in China.

Conteh said Wang’s visit to Banjul is a manifestation of cordial bilateral ties and that it will help promote trade and investments.
Wang visited Gambia on Jan. 5-6.
