Yang Jiechi talks Sino-Africa relations with President Jacob Zuma

South African President Jacob Zuma meets Chinese state councilor in Johannesburg

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma met with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Johannesburg on Saturday, ahead of an upcoming summit in the city that President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend.

During the meeting, Zuma conveyed cordial greetings and best wishes to his Chinese counterpart, saying he looks forward to co-chairing the sixth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) with President Xi.

Zuma said African countries should take advantage of the summit to seek closer cooperation with China, especially in the fields of economic and social development.

Yang told President Zuma that the Sino-Africa relations were gaining new momentum since the launch of China-Africa Cooperation Forum in 2000 and that China is willing to advance the strategic partnership with South Africa to a new level.

The Chinese official added that Xi’s visit will serve as a milestone for the development of both China-South Africa ties and China-Africa ties.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the FOCAC’s founding and the forum’s 2015 summit is scheduled to take place in in Johannesburg in early December.
