South Africa: Brics Leaders Condemn Terror Attacks in Paris

Brics leaders, including SA President Jacob Zuma, have condemned the terror attacks this weekend that took place in Paris, the Presidency said on Sunday.

“The leaders strongly condemned the abhorrent terror attacks in Paris. They expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and extended their wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured,” said Presidential spokesperson Bongani Majola in a statement, following the informal meeting of the heads of Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA on the margins of the G20 Summit in Antalya on Sunday.

A series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks across entertainment venues in Paris, on Friday night, left 129 dead and hundreds more wounded.

Majola said the Brics leaders also expressed support for France in tracking down those responsible for the attacks.

According to various reports, the Islamic State [ISIS] group, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

“The leaders recommitted to strengthen co-operation among BRICS countries and with other nations in the fight against terrorism.”

The leaders were also pleased with the progress made between their countries this year.

“The New Development Bank (NDB) is starting its operating activities and is expected to launch its inaugural projects in the beginning of 2016.”

The first meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Anti-Corruption on 1 November was also welcomed.

However, Brics leaders were disappointed by “the lack of progress in modernising international financial institutions, especially on the agreements on the reform of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)”.

The countries’ leaders called for reforms that would assist developing countries and emerging market economies.

China’s upcoming presidency of the G20 was also supported by the Brics leaders.
