Joburg summit for China-Africa cooperation reaps early achievements

Results of the last year’s Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) have been implemented, with early-phase achievements made, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said.
Wang made the remarks at the Coordinators’ Meeting of the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the FOCAC Johannesburg Summit in Beijing.
"The first batch of 10-billion-U.S.-dollar fund for China-Africa industrial capacity cooperation has been launched, and an additional five-billion-U.S.-dollar special loan for the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Africa is already in place," Wang said.
Businesses including currency swap have begun in countries like Morocco, Kenya, Nigeria, and the Republic of Congo, according to Wang.
"Over the past six months following the summit, China and Africa have signed 182 cooperation agreements in various fields, involving around 32.5 billion U.S. dollars, with commercial loans accounting for nearly 90 percent, reaching 29.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to incomplete statistics," Wang said.
He said China and Africa have been stressing feasibility of cooperation programs, making coordinated plans in large-scale infrastructure construction and development of relevant industries, so as to ensure social and economic effects of the programs and prevent risks of new debts of Africa.
"We will strengthen ecological civilization cooperation and wildlife preservation, enhance Africa’s law enforcement capacity in environmental protection, promote an environment-friendly capacity cooperation, and jointly safeguard ecological environment and long-term interests of Africa," Wang said.
At the FOCAC summit last December in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced ten major China-Africa cooperation plans for the next three years, backed by 60 billion U.S. dollars, including interest free loans and preferential policies.
